point. the presidential and vice presidential candidate will make a final push to get out the vote today. >> for the most part, they are traveling to several of much needed battleground states. that does include virginia. melanie is back with the latest now from the campaign trail. >> and not much time to sleep and already they are off and running this morning. mitt romney's first seent about to start in orlando, florida. live look from the scene there. you see jeff bush there in the background. getting ready to rally the crowd. and michelle obama will be appearing in orlando later today. by the end of the day, done all they can do and might be a brief moment of pause. before then, it is a mad dash to the finish line which includes five stops in virginia and four stops in ohio in just 48 hours. the vice presidential candidates are doing their part. joe biden and his wife have two stops planned in virginia today including a visit to sterling.

joined by singer john melencamp. then travel to colorado and iowa. the man on top of the republican ticket mitt romney hits four sunday. two in virginia and one in ohio before bringing his campaign to rest with a rally in new hampshire. endless speeches will be in wisconsin and ohio and wrap up his day in iowa. monday is more about energizing supporters and getting them out to the polls. >> it's going to be a close election. the national election is tied. the key part is what's happening on the battleground states. president obama has his advantage at this stage of the game and how do you get the vote out? that's going to be the critical point. >> i think the romney people are feeling good about the fact this is basically a tied race at the present time. but what happens in races that are tied is that the incumbent never

really bumps above the number that he had at the end of the campaign. and it is generally the challenger that benefits at the end of the campaign. >> the first votes will be cast just after midnight tonight. even that -- and as we know, early results from virginia and florida are being looked at for the rest of the night is going to go. >> kind of exciting. thank you so much. >> all right. do want to let you know in our area, early voting ended over the weekend. more than 17,000 people in silver spring, maryland alone cast their ballots early. the state set up 46 early voting centers across the state. but officials were criticized for not having enough machines or staff to accommodate the long lines. all of those early ballots will be counted and added up tomorrow afternoon.

announced after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. . >> polls will be open all day tomorrow. polls open at 7:00 a.m. remain open until 8:00 a.m. virginia, voters can cast ballots from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. . >> and maryland 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. >> voters in maryland will get the chance to weigh in on hot button questions which are also getting a final push. a support rally will be held today at silver spring campus for the dream act which would offer in state college tuition to illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements. governor and congressman will hold a news conference at the university at maryland. urging voters to support same sex marriage. in the meantime, the washington post is throwing its support behind the dream act. however, the post did not endorse question 5 which would

an earthquake. a small tremor hit around 1:20 this morning. centered in ringwood new jersey. some residents reported hearing a loud boom at the time. there was no reported damage. and today residents will be allowed back to their homes to chek out damage and grab belongings. more than $150 million in aid for those affected by the super storm. unfortunately, more bad weather may be on the way with high winds and rain expected from that system that tucker mentioned a few minutes ago later this week. the hurricane caused a ripple affect causing the cancellation of the new york city marathon. >> some of the runners got to work helping in the recovery efforts. sara is back in studio with more on that. really good to hear. >> it really is. this is a heart warming story. something that's good to hear after

everything that's happened. some people scheduled to participate in the new york city marathon volunteered during the time they would have been running. they are helping with the clean up handing out supplies and raising funds. the organization new york road runners even started a new race to recover fund that has collected more than $2.6 million already. >> we're here to help out. a lot of people here in need. supposed to run a marathon but that's nothing compared to what's going on here. we wanted to lend a hand in whatever way we could. >> disappointment has turned into something great and something amazing. people are coming together and turning this bad situation into something good. >> the new york road reasoners donated $1 million. wow. all right. a lot of those who planned on running in the marathon have someone or something that has inspired them to run. chris is one of them. he decided to run his first marathon to help raise money for

als research. his dad has the illness. when the marathon was canceled. he sll wanted to run. he ran the whole 26.2 miles on a local high school track by himself. his dad watched from his wheelchair there. and a soccer game even stopped and players cheered him on. one of the parents ran a few miles and when he crossed the finish line, he had such an emotional moment with his dad. amazing stories coming out. i watched that earlier. and you can hear and feel the emotion there as he's with his dad. great to hear these stories coming out of the marathon. even though it was canceled, a lot of people who wanted to run and controversy whether to have it or not. good to see good coming out of . >> i was happy to hear they canceled it. >> i was too. probably a good idea with everything that was happening. such a difficult time and people needed hotel

rooms. >> the main concern a lot of the people were coming to new york to run it was the decision to cancel came so late. it was late in the day on friday. >> i would agree with that. should have been done earlier. >> great to see some of the efforts turn around and go to something else in the wake of all of that. >> could have left town but they didn't. >> well, it is going to be a tough day for commuters using rail lines along the east coast. amtrak has express and northeast regional service. but with reduced frequencies today. there could be delays still because of on going repairs. the new york subway system is expected to be packed because more people are returning to work and to school. and more people are trying to avoid driving in the wake of the gas shortage. >> of course, millions of lives were put on hold when sandy came crashing ashore. the storm didn't alter our daily routines. may have had an affect on some

diet myths that even your doctor believes. he biggest cancer risks and how to stay healthy after 35. those are topics dr. oz is taking on this week. and joins us live this morning from new york city. always good to see you. >> good morning. >> let's start with the bad news. we're seeing the pictures come out of new york and new jersey. you're saying this has a definite impact on the health of people especially living

there. can you talk about it dr. oz? >> well, i, like so many others, living without heat. stresses you out at a very different level. turns out that after these types of natural disasters, the heart attack rate increases by three fold. because of the stress that continuous on going stress. especially when you don't feel like you can control it. the advice i'm giving all the folks is at first off, lots of water. helps thin the blood and the water is still clean here. secondly, everybody feeling stressed including the washington area, it's getting incredibly important to keep taking your medications. pharmacies have bonded together. you can get the meds from other places. and finally, and most importantly, the real help is not going to come from the federal government or police officers. it's going to come from your neighbors. we've always been able to survive

these kind of events by bonding together. good time to show that works. >> let's talk about the topics you are tackling this week. you are talking about body type and metabolism. something we hear a lot about. maybe we can help it depending on what our body type is. tell us how this works. >> it's going to surprise a lot of folks. the big message is if you know your body shape, you can better. people who have fat around the belly are not like people who have pears. and they are different from the people who are boxes who are fat all over. different hormones cause those different shapes. for example, let's say you have a big belly. caused by stress. puts fat in your belly. if you do things like eating low calorie diet or if you are trying to exercise the fat away, those two things cause stress.

you'll put on more weight and frustratingly so. in that study, low glycemic index food. eat different kinds of food if you have fat in your belly. different rules apply for thighs and bottom. all that this afternoon. >> and tomorrow a lot of time when we talk metabolism we talk age and you are tackling specific issues targeted towards those of us over 35 and some of us well over 35. >> we collected the biggest complaints women over age 35 have. number one was stress and the inability to cope with it. there's something called lemon balm extract. been around for a long time. all natural and impacts on the brain receptors the same way that vallum does. it's safe and taken in low doses. one drop into a glass of water.

and something i recommend to deal with the first of many complaints on tomorrow's show. >> you tested a little bit with trying to work with your metabolism. but also taking one whole show and looking at diet myths and there are plenty to go around. >> well, this is a show that was so explosive, i'd have to have a fire marshal in the studio. walk you through big myths. i'll give you an example of one. a lot of folks believe they should not eat until th are hungry. and we're going to talk about that myth. when there's a hormone that's secreted. takes a half an hour to go back to normal. if you are like me, you've eaten three meals in that 30 minute period. if you wait until you are hungry, you are sabotaging. the key is eat before you are hungry. >> on thursday, have a pen and paper really. you aretalking about tackling cancer and some of the things you can do to

better your chances for surviving cancer. really an important show coming up. >> well, the reason i like talking about shows like this is we can save a lot of lives quickly. talk about the cancer so many of us fear. ovarian cancer. some of you can identify. usually yourself if you know what symptoms to look for. things like bloating and being full early after starting a meal. identifying those is important. turns out that low dose oral contraceptives work to reduce the chance. and pancreatic cancer. seems to be correlated with things we didn't appreciate before. like certain types of act better i can't. diabetes might be linked to pancreatic cancer as well. and the cancer increasing fast among woman is stomach cancer.

joining us is john townsend with aaa midatlantic. good to have you here. >> just like the mafia. >> let's talk a little about what the may or has now proposed on friday with the changes. and it's a little complicated because some things are coming down. others are going up. can you summarize for us? >> the basic speed will drop $25. so the $75 fine drops to $50. the $125 fine drops to $100. and that's the major one. the majority of all tickets are for going 11 miles over the speed limit. and the rest of the fines, the ones at $250 that one goes up to $300. >> that's for the most serious. >> the mayor was making a

strike against the task force recommendation. and there's a hearing on that today by the counc. have a public hearing on this. and the council recommendation is that all fines with the exception of the most egregious ones be lowered to $50 flat. and that's the way it was three years ago before the mayor raised the fines in an effort to raise $30 million in addition to revenue to close the budgetary gap in the city. that under minded public confidence in the ticketing process. >> seemed like it's just to raise money. >> it was to raise money, generate revenue. >> aaa was on the task force right? >> we were. >> so does this move under mine the task force or does it just say hey i'm on board with changes as well? >> well, what has happened, tony, is there's been a tremendous backlash against these fines.

and not just for people who are concerned about traffic safety but equity. and this is pronounced in the poor neighbors. where 50% of those people have to drive across town to get to work. and so $125 fine which doubles to $250 because of a late fee in one month, that was really hard for them to stomach. so we saw this backlash. although, district residents only get 25% of the tickets. and those outside of the district generate 75% of the tickets. the backlash came from within the city itself. that's what they are hearing from. not hearing from those motorists from maryland who get 50% of the tickets or maryland motorists in virginia who get 15% of the tickets. >> if i'm a driver in the district, tell me how this affects me. does the mayor's recommendations don't need the approval of the city council?

>> no. they are partial to law. enacted immediately. >> en acted as of this morning. does the hearing still go on? >> it does. it begins at 10:30 this morning. one hour from now. >> and what might come out of that? >> we think the council's bill will prevail. >> will the council's bill supercede what the mayor has done? >> enacted the new penalty regime by executive order. the council bill if it's passed will become the law. trap the mayor's plan. >> and in the end, the council's bill as what we believe would lower fines even more. >> right. to $50. with all traffic camera fines with the exception of aggressive speeding or excessive speeding. let me say one more thing, this whole thing is really about money.

look at prince georges county which wrote over 475,000 tickets last year. those were in school zones and generated $17 million in revenue as opposed to what the district generated $85 million. when all the fees were paid prince georges county only collected $7 million. no one objects to that. that is speeding in the county and school zones. who can organize against that? small kids are involved. >> we have to go. thank you for the explainer. we'll see what happens today after the hearing. we'll be back in just a couple moments.  man: to o some people, social security is just a number. but to me, it's s money that i earned.

a bad wrap. i've only heard really good things. loyalty, intelligence. tell us more about the shepards. you have 11 in your home right now. can you tell us what kind of shepard a good home will fit into? >> they are active. they are going to need exercise. they need structure and a person that's going to be the leader. and if you want a dog that's going to be loyal. they are not recognized by the akc. so some organizes don't accept them. >> good with kids. we've seen it. >> yes. we have some like with any dog you have some that are really good around smaller kids. some around bigger kids. and these guys can be active dogs. unless they are raised around a

child who is used to active dogs then sometimes they can get knocked down. they can be hype error high energy. we have medium energy shepards as well. and of course we have the middle aged shepards 5 and up who have slowed down which normally they can be good with that. we do the research. >> i'm talking about those folks. when you see this group, you are saying i want a shepard right now. >> we do tests to find out what they are good around. >> thank you so much. thank you for coming in. thank you so much. we'll be right back.
